Fantasia Ucraina

Fantasia Ucraina for two violins
Fantasia Ucraina für zwei Violinen

UA 10. April 2022, Herzfelde

(en:) On 11th February 2022 an invitation arrived from the Ukranian National Tchaikovsky Academy of Music in Kyiv to participate in the Second International Festival "New Music in Ukraine" later that month. Whilst thinking about repertoire, the situation deteriorated, and it became clear that there would be no way of attending the festival. Two days after the begin of the invasion of Ukraine, I received a request from Duo ASAP, Munich, to write a work connected in some way to Ukraine for a concert on the same day. Fantasia Ucraina was finished by mid-afternoon and first performed on 10th April 2022 in the church of Herzfelde, near Templin, Brandenburg. There followed further performances in other European countries, including in UK, Austria, Switzerland and Spain. A notable performance was played on 21st April by the young Polish violinists Anna Korkowska and Kaja Winiarska, wearing Ukrainian national dress, at the Central Music School in Krosno, South-East Poland, about 90 km from the Ukrainian border.

A fragment of a Ukrainian folk-song with its characteristic augmented second, as well as the Ukranian national anthem, "Shche ne vmerla Ukrayina" (Ще не вмерла Україна, lit. 'Ukraine has not yet perished') are quoted in Fantasia Ucraina. The introduction and the postlude suggest the wide-open plains and steppes of central Ukraine. The hymn undergoes two variations before transforming into the optimistic tonality of D major. It is with echoes of the folk song that the work draws to a peaceful and serene close.

(en:) Shravana is a Sanskrit word meaning "I hear", and five pieces form a cycle, each with Buddhist overtones. The voices of mezzo-soprano, cello and piano are used in various combinations throughout the cycle.
The first piece is slow, reflective. A bell-like motive calls the assembled company to attention. Then a slow mantra-like phrase is repeated in voice, cello and piano in different variations.
The second piece is a kind of recitative.
The third piece is a ceremonial Buddhist dance - quite vigorous, even aggressive at times, reflecting the abrupt movements in ever widening circles of the original Buddhist dance.
The fourth piece is a Vocalise - long melismata phrases weave together in three verses, the last of which transforms the final "chorus" refrain into a coda.
The final piece is an affirmation of the positive energy of Buddhism. The work begins slowly and subdues, but transforms into an outburst of optimism and steadfastness. The bells from the opening piece reappear in transfigured form to bring the work to an abrupt close.

2. Om Tare - eine Art Rezitativ
3. Vajrakilaya - ein zeremonieller buddhistischer Tanz in ziemlich energischen, manchmal sogar aggressiven Bewegungen, in immer größeren Kreisen
4. Vokalise - lange Melisma-Phrasen in drei Strophen miteinander verwoben

Variations for Solo Cello

Variations for Solo Cello
Variationen für Cello solo

UA 14. Februar 2020, Wien

(en:) Variations for Cello Solo was written in December 2019, originally as an offering for an end-of-year family gathering. Each variation was to depict a member of the family, in character varioations similar to Elgar's Enigma Variations. The first public performance was given by the composer at a portrait concert in Vienna on 14th February 2020.

The theme contains four musical phrases, consisting of a sequence of rising thirds at the opening, and a sequence of pizzicato augmented fourths / diminished fifths at the close. Whilst the earlier variations adhere quite closely to the theme, the later variations mirror the theme less strictly. The variations cover a wide range of moods, motivations and manners, reflecting differences in personalities, attitudes and age-groups within a large family.

Following the vigorous, flamenco-style chords of Variation 8, the C-string is left vibrating. This should connect seamlessly with the first (bowed) note of the following variation. Scirocco then refers to the warm, south-easterly wind, and the variation should be played correspondingly "ventosamente" ("windily" or "airily"). The final variation extends to a rhapsodic quasi-coda, which climbs up to c'''' in altissima, before tumbling down 5 octaves back to the open C-string. The work closes with a re-statement of the opening theme, a kind of symbol of the continuity of the family, which, despite arguments and altercations, will always prevail.

Variations for Cello Solo is dedicated to Professor Young-Chang Cho, a former teacher, in grateful recognition of the memorable years of tuition at the Folkwang Hochschule. It was published by Schott in 2020.

Concentricities

Concentricities for clarinet, cello and piano
Konzentrisches für Klarinette, Cello und Klavier

UA 10.

en Concentricities is a Joycean elaboration of the word concentric, with overtones of eccentric and city. Concentric patterns ccur in nature, for instance in pinecones, rose petals, coral reefs, as well as in culture, such as in medieval architecture, and in certain paintings of andinsky. Natural and man-made phenomena sprang to mind during the process of composing, each connected in some way with the idea of concentric, ggesting certain musical contours, shapes, moods or exchanges between the instruments. The ideas were subsequently developed in purely musical terms. There was no intention to create literal parallels between non-musical and musical concepts.

I Birds of Prey – The title refers to the widening circles which eagles and falcons fly whilst hunting for prey, as witnessed on the south Cornish coast in summer 2019.

II Cityscapes – They are images of the jagged, restless, continually shifting skylines and perspectives of a modern mega-city, the skyscrapers and treets of which create imaginary artificial canyons with vertiginous walls, deep valleys and enormous height differences.

III Pagoda – It stands for a delicate edifice, silent witness to ancient Chinese culture. The movement is in five sections, alternating pensive music with restless music, a reflection of the interlocking segments of the tower.

IV Oscillations – The music recalls casting stones into a high Alpine mountain lake, the burgeoning ripples gradually enveloping the entire surface, then ancelling themselves out on rebounding from the rim.

V Ring of Stone – The title suggests a fleeting vision of a prehistoric tribe engaged in ritual chanting and dancing within the concentric arches of Stonehenge in Wiltshire.

When composing pieces with titles, I am aware of treading a knife-edge path between attempting to bring the image to life and creating a oherent piece of music. A balance has to be found between the two apparently contradictory preoccupations of illuminating an extra-musical idea and creating a composition which stands on its own terms. The above images served to set the imagination in motion. The perennial musical considerations of statement, repetition, and development were just as significant in informing the unfolding of the movements. Combinations of wind and strings hold a significant place in my chamber works. The clarinet, with its more than three-octave compass, richness of the lower register and wide range of dynamics, complements the cello in a unique and special way. For technical and editorial assistance with the clarinet part I am indebted to Hans-Joachim Mohrmanonn. The work is dedicated to the composer, conductor, oboist and teacher Edwin Roxburgh, with gratitude for the wide-ranging and lively discussions in preparation for my PhD submission at Birmingham City University in 2018.

Chinese Zodiac

Chinese Zodiac for cello and piano
Chinesischer Tierkreis für Cello und Klavier

UA 28. Oktober 2018, München

en Chinese Zodiac is a composition for cello and piano in seven short movements. It was written with a German/Chinese family in mind. The work follows on from Chinese Whispers Dragonesque, which also combine Chinese and European musical elements. A Prologue sets the scene for a narrative scenario, describing a lively rural family with a young child quarreling with its parents and escaping to the forest. The child experiences visions of the five Chinese elements, the characteristics of which overlap with the animals of the Chinese Zodiac. The visions appear in the order: Metal, Wood, Earth, Fire, Water. The piece closes with a Postlude in which the child is escorted home by friendly forest animals. In its bed, the child drifts off to sleep, casting into doubt whether the events actually happened, or where perhaps just imagined. Following on from the Ballet project "The Seven Ages", the music is consciously descriptive and graphic, using a wide range of devices and techniques to bring the narrative to life.

The Seven Ages

The Seven Ages, interactive ballet for seven female danvers (the seven ages), a male dancer (Death), two violins (muses), viola and cello, after Shakespeare's "All the world's a stage"

The Seven Ages (Die sieben Lebensalter), interaktives Ballett für sieben Tänzerinnen (sieben Alter), einem Tänzer (Tod), zwei Violinen (Musen), Viola und Cello, nach Shakespeares "All the world's a stage"

UA 14. Oktober 2018, Gilching

de The Seven Ages (Die sieben Lebensalter) entstand als Auftragswerk.

en It was in early 2016 that I was asked to consider a subject for a 50 minute ballet for the Gilching Ballett-Schule. The idea appealed greatly – I had always wanted to write a ballet even more than an opera, having grown up with, played and hugely admired the repertoire of the Ballets Russes. I searched for scenario which would feature the two violinists of Duo ASAP, not just as musicians, but as protagonists in the stage action too. Having seen As You Like It recently at the Globe Theatre in London, it struck me that Jacques' famous speech, „All the World’s a stage“ (Act II, Scene 7) with its succinct, vivid descriptions of the Seven Ages of man, could form the basis for such a ballet. Shakespeare’s verses would act as Leitmotiv through a series of scenes, in which the seven ages, from infant child to elderly person would be acted out by individual dancers, and „commented upon“ by the violin duo, much in the style of the Greek chorus. At times the violinists would be drawn into the action, elsewhere observing from the side-lines, always playing the duo music carrying forward the narrative.

The seven tableaux for each of the seven ages are "set-piece" compositions written for violin duo, each with a different expression or energy, according to the respective age. The dancing figures in the ballet are understood as symbols of different stages of life, transcending considerations of time, gender, stereo-type. Between each scene are short interludes for the other two off-stage members of the quartet – viola and cello. These both reflect upon the preceding events and prepare the way, musically and atmosperically for the following scene.

All through the seven scenes, the black figure of Death is omni-present, albeit in a passive role, a symbol of the unavoidable spectre of death, which accompanies humans throughout the entire cycle of life. After the dancers depicting the seven ages have all had their turn, the figure of Death rises from his plinth and asserts his own presence in three Dances of Death. For the first time (except at the opening), the string quartet is heard in „full voice“. Both within these dances and throughout the entire ballet, the figure of Death is treated as a benign, well-meaning figure, as much part of life as the changing ages themselves. This follows the medieval tradition of German tales, engravings, plays, in which the shrouded, skeleton figure of Death, often carrying a scythe, interacts and mingles with the earthlings in an untroubled, „collegiale“ way (for example in „Tod und das Mädchen“). This stands in contrast to the Mediterranean and French depictions, where the black figure of death is rather considered as a threatening, menacing force.

Towards the close, each age has its own entretien with the figure of Death, as if acknowledging his inavoidable presence, but in a reconciliatory way. Fragments of the duo music from the previous scenes are briefly recalled. In a further twist to the narrative, one of the violinists escapes from the quartet constellation and performs her own dance with the deathly figure. Musicians, after all, are as much subject to the laws of nature as everyone else. The life cycle is closed by a return of the early lullaby which sooths the new-born infant to sleep, as in the opening scene. The music creeps from low on the cello C-string up through five octaves to the high, consonant intervals of the two violins, with which the whole work began. The ritual gong sounds once again, representing both the close of a human cycle, as well as the start of a new one.

Dragonesque

Dragonesque for cello and piano

en Dragonesque was composed in 2017 and forms one of a set of five "Esques" for cello and piano. It was written for two young players who successfully performed it at the Jugend Musiziert Bundeswettbewerb as well as at the Beethoven Haus in Bonn. The title was selected by the players and refers to the benign far Eastern Dragon rather than the fire-spitting tyrannical kind known in Europe. "Esque" means "in the manner of" and the music hints at the characteristics of its subject rather than trying to depict it in literal terms. The musical argument throughout is divided equally between cello and piano.

Dragonesque opens with an atmosphere of mystery and foreboding, but this gives way to music in a more up-beat vein, with traces of the pentatonic scale. The third of four sections uses ricochet bowing techniques to return to the quizzical, veiled mood of the opening, before the twirling and circling airborne antics of the dragon draw the music to a vigorous close.

Emerald Spring

Emerald Spring, cycle of Irish songs for soprano and piano
Emerald Spring (Smaragdfrühling), Zyklus irischer Lieder für Sopran und Klavier

UA 22. Juli 2018, München

en Emerald Spring was composed in 2017 in response to a request from the soprano Clare Treacey and her family for a song cycle reflecting Irish connections. In searching for words to set I looked at Irish verse from the earliest centuries after the birth of Christ up to the present day, witness to an immensely rich heritage of literature through the ages. Encouraged by the soprano for whom the work was being written, I eventually decided upon seven texts by women poets, dating from the 8th century to present day.

The poems cover a wide range of subjects and sensibilities, from the radical evangelising of "Eve" and "The Phoenix", through Victorian sentiments of "The Spring", and "Song" to the upbeat, maverick, contemporary proletizing of "News", "Small Breaths" and "The Poetry Bug". The poems share a common attitude to the country of Ireland, to its people, its nature, its religion, its daily life. The vocal part expresses a multitude of different moods and affectations according to the nature of the poem being set.

UA 8. Oktober 2017, München

en The initial idea for the Bagatelles came from a picture of an installation entitled Ilya Kabakov, the man who flew into space from his apartment". This sparked off an imaginery science-fiction narrative, appealing for the generation brought up with Dr Who and "Hitchhikers' Guide to the Galaxy". Kabakov encounters various apochrophal characters, situations, states of mind before his journey is finally cut short when he confronts the galactic city.

Ilya, sitting peacefully at his place,
was one sunny Sunday suddenly catapulted into space.
On leaving earth's athmosphere far below,
he found himself weightless, top to toe.
His first terrifying encounter was with a demonic extra-terrestial,
in the shape of a beast most bestial.
He soothed his nerves and calmed his mood,
humming an otherwordly melody from his child-hood.
Who should o'er-hear him, hand in laser-Sword,
but the forbidding, the black-masked Space Lord.
They chatted about times present, future and past,
Ilya's vision of life in the stars grew fast.
On he accelerated, past time-warps and nebulae,
past dopplar effects and meteorae.
His progress was halted with dazzling alacrity,
on coming face to face with the menacing Galactic City.

– Graham Waterhouse, Eight Bagatelles

There are eight shortish pieces, each different in length, scoring and mood. An under-lying current is time-travel, which applies also to the types of music, which encompass a broad spectrum between dissonance and euphony, sophistication and commonplace. The Bagatelles explore one sentiment each; they are fleeting visions of an outlandish imaginery scenario.

  7. The Poetry Bug (Colette Bryce, early 21st century)
  8. The Irish Phoenix (Anon, 18th century)

en Following on from Music of Sighs which set extracts of James Joyce, Irish Phoenix is a cycle of seven songs for soprano and instrumental ensemble setting poems of Irish women poets through the centuries. It was composed in the early months of 2017.
The subjects of the poems span religious fervour of the Middle Ages, through yearning sentiment of the Victorian Age, disillusionment of early 20th century through to the restless frenzy of the late 20th century. The predominantly lyrical mood of the poems is reflected in the music, which aims to colour and illuminate the words according to their varied expression. Particularly two of most recent poems, "News" and "The Poetry Bug" are filled with far-fetched imagery, as well as being at times biting and sarcastic. These call for virtuosic treatment from the singer, who uses at times a quasi-parlando style, associated formerly with vaudeville or music-hall.

UA 24.

Die Phrase „I hypnot“ kann man as "I hope not“, als „I hype not“, oder sogar als „I hypnotise“ verstehen.

UA 28. Februar 2016, Hombroich

en Hinx, Minx is a song cycle for mezzo-soprano and cello of six settings of English nursery rhymes. The pieces were written in early January 2016 for a concert at the Museumsinsel in Hombroich in February 2016 with the mezzo-soprano Eva Vogel and the composer. The texts were drawn from the Oxford Dictionary of Nursery Rhymes and combine well-known rhymes such as Hinx, minx with obscurer ones such as Solomon Grundy.

Each is quite different in character and this is reflected in the way that the voice and the cello interact. In no. 1 the cello and voice mock each other in teasing imitation. In no. 2 the cello strums a moto perpetuo pizzicato accompaniment to the repetitive metre. In no. 5 the voice and cello move in almost parallel over the inexorable pulsating c string (left Hand pizz.) which signifies the passing of time.

The music reacts delightedly to the absurd and far-fetched images, rhymes and illiterations. When Jumping Joan becomes a ghost, one wonders if it is Joan of Arc that is meant. And the ludicrous-sounding words of Chinese Counting find utterance in fleeting, Tarantella-like rhythm.

L. A. Duophony

L. A. Duophony für zwei Violinen

UA 27. Februar 2016, Gilching

Duophony.

Within this Duo for Violin and Cello can be found hints of Didgeridu sounds, as well as suggestions of barking and howling especially at the beginning and at the end.

en: Le Loup-garou, after the transcription of Christian Morgenstern's poem Der Werwolf, for cello and speaking voice

en: The poem "Der Werwolf" has been regarded as untranslatable, because of its German specifics. Le Loup-garou is the third setting of the plot, after "The Banshee" and "Der Werwolf". The narrative takes place in a country grave-yard, at which a werwolf (loup-garou) seeks out the village teacher and asks him to decline his name. The French setting makes wide use of extended techniques. The entire piece is played without the use of the bow. The slightly macabre, otherwordly athmosphere of the poem is re-created in sound using a wide range of pizzicato, finger-tapping, flickering and other percussive techniques. The particular rhythm of the French text calls for a time signature of 15/16 which is maintained throughout much of the piece. The notation is on three staves, the voice line uppermost, then the right hand, the left-hand below. The outlandish French translation transforms Morgenstern's Werwolf, Weswolf and Wenwolf into loup-garou, loup garqui, loup-garcomment and loup-garqui. At the end of the piece the loup-garou trots off into the night, represented by left-hand knuckle-tapping on the corpus of the instrument.

Skylla and Charybdis

en: Skylla and Charybdis, piano quartet
de: Skylla and Charybdis, Klavierquartett

UA 2. November 2014, München

en: Skylla and Charybdis refer to the two sea monsters which, as reported by Homer in the Odyssey, lived opposite each other, probably on he straits of Messina, though this is not explicitly stated, and, with their long and treachorous tentacles, devoured any errant sailors or sea travellers that ventured too close. Odysseus lost six of his crew as he passed through the straits.

The piece is in four movements which are played without a break. They do not refer specifically to the protagonists or to events connected with the famous legend, but rather play on the abstract images conjoured up in the composer's mind during the writing, i.e. to his own subjective reaction to thoughts concerning the saga.

The opening reflects on the deep channel, the swirling currents within the straights. This sea Picture is interrupted by a fast movement of threatening and aggressive character, characterized by abrupt dynamic and metric changes. After a hushed, hymn-like interlude, based upon overlapping melodic lines, mirroring each other like primitive tribal chants there follows a 9/8 conclusion in which the stringed instrumentalists seem to battle it out with the piano for supremacy - though no clear winner emerges.

As with other recent works, the composer is interested in the interface between traditional chamber music and the avant-garde movements. This reflects the composer's own background and experience, which embraces both the classical repertoire and, largely through his association with a number of New Music ensembles, avant garde means of expression. On the one hand he treasures the virtues of fine chamber music writing and playing, with its emphasis on dialogue, on action in balance with reaction and on the interplay between equal partners. On the other he likes to exploit "contemporary" compositional and instrumental techniques as a means of extending the palette of musical sounds and expression. Hence the use of devices such as bitonality, sul-ponticello, glissandi and barriolage, though always within the context of a coherent, through-composed musical structure.

Jota Cromatica

en: Jota Cromatica for Viola and piano
de: Jota Cromatica für Viola und Klavier

UA 2. März 2014, Berg

en: Jota Cromatica was written in early 2014 as a companion piece to the Sonata ebraica. The Jota is a Spanish dance in three-time, most commonly associated with the regions of Aragon and Navarra. In its original form it was accompanied by such instruments as bag-pipes, guitars, tambourines and castanettes. Liszt, among others, wrote a celebrated Jota for piano.

The emphasis in this quasi-virtuosic concert-piece is primarily on a lively and robust dialogue between the two instruments. This is set against a continually shifting harmonic background, putting into question the nominally pivotal tonal axis of D. An introduction uses a toccata-like, alternating-hands figuration in the piano. Then, after a hesitant "false start", the dance begins, charaterised by strong accents and repetitive two-bar phrases. A second subject is more linear and lyrical, especially in the viola writing, - "chromatic" here in the side-stepping nature of the voice leading. The coda works itself into a well-nigh hispanic frenzy before the opening toccata figuration in the piano calls a halt to the proceedings and abruptly draws the work to a close.

UA 11. November 2014, Berg

en: The work attempts to extend both instrumental and harmonic vocabulary. Various "extended techniques" are used, including string slapping, barriolage, sul ponticello and col legno battuto, to expand the palette of sounds. Dissonances are often left unresolved, and the part writing often more independent and contrapuntal. There is a demonic 12 tone row in the aphoristic breathless scherzo, which permeates the middle section of the movement. The work captures sounds of the island and twittering birds, recollections of Navaho Indian music and static, non-developmental harmonies.
1. The Rock - sounds of the island then and now - birds - clunk of keys (which inmates said defined the day) - sounds of the vigorous night - life wafting over to the isand to the despair of the prisoners
2. Solitary - fanatif thoughts of a solitary prisoner
3. Sioux - The Island used to be a sacred place for the Native Americans. What a crual twist of fate, that Natives were locked up there. The movement recalls a Navaho melody notated by the composer on a trip to US in the 1970s.
4. Testimony - a brash, quite orchestrally conceived movement, inspired by the many layers of human occupation

UA 9.

en: The String Sextet op. 1 spans more than four decades from the composition of the first movement to preparation for publication. The work represents for me a kind of time travelling, spanning different locations as well as eras of differing tastes, attitudes and levels of skill. Each movement is like a time-capsule, capturing experiments with traditional forms, string counterpoint, an exuberant Eastern European dance vein, progressing to a more astringent style taking hold in the fourth movement, with its sevenths, open fourths and fifths to assume a more prominent role in subsequent works.

The first movement was written in early 1979 for a school music competition whilst a pupil at Highgate School, London. The movement was first performed by all five members of my family with the then Director of Music on 2nd cello. The adjudicator Susan Bradshaw, distinguished pianist and then Boulez protégée, remarked afterwards that though an individual compositional style was not quite yet in evidence, the movement sounded like no-one else. She also suggested completing a four movement work, advice which was eventually heeded, albeit with an interval of 33 years!

The second movement, Fugue, was written in 1982 during University days in Cambridge, a time of studies in counterpoint and fugue, and has a rather rigorous demeanour. The third movement, Scherzo, begun in Zakopane, Poland in 1984, is lilting and dance-like and experiments further with layered string writing (e.g. combining three times two lines), a striking feature of the classical 19th century octets and string sextets, known to me through Chamber Music Summer Schools. The fourth movement, composed in 2012, was based upon my recollection of a Macedonian folk-melody encountered at the wedding of a University friend in Skopje. Rhythmically and harmonically this movement represents an advancement on the earlier movements, completed in time for my 50th birthday concert at Gasteig, Munich.

The work underwent further revisions and refinement up to publication, benefitting from performances at Summer Schools and recommendations from musician colleagues. Earlier awkwardness in voice-leading and counterpoint were corrected, though the overall shape of the movements remained intact. On the advice of my father William Waterhouse, following an early performance of the first movement, 4 extra bars were inserted towards the end to enhance the final modulation onto the tonic. I am grateful to violinist David Fruehwirth, Vienna, for editorial advice.

Publication was completed in time for a performance the GW60 Festkonzert at the Allerheiligen-Hofkirche in Munich in November 2022. The work is dedicated to Elisabeth Waterhouse, my mother, whose life-long commitment to string chamber music and whose pioneering work with Summer Schools for string players dating back to the mid 1970s have been a significant inspiration for this work.

en: Trilogy was written in April 2013 for a French-German Gala concert in Munich. The piece, scored for piano and string quartet, is based principally on the National Anthems of France and Germany. Symbolic of the cordial and conciliatory sentiments of the evening, the two Anthems are, in the course of their presentation, superimposed - sounding together in harmony. At the apogee of the work, as these two Anthems draw to a close, in chimes the English National Anthem, in a different key, surrounded by the martial, rhythmic strains of the "Marseillaise". At the very end, in an especially significant gesture of pan-European cooperation and counterpoint, the openings of all three Anthems resound together. Three different tunes, each unique, steeped in history, together with their imagined words run concurrently - hence the title, "Trilogy" (Ancient Greek: "three words").

The Vasty Deep

en: The Vasty Deep, tone poem for orchestra

UA 17. März 2013, Offenbach

de: Die Worte "the vasty deep" stammen aus Shakespeares historischem Drama "Henry IV", Teil 1.

The Bandersnatch

en: The Bandersnatch, for piano trio
de: The Bandersnatch, für Klaviertrio

UA 16. März 2013, Salem, Virginia

en: "The Bandersnatch" is the name of an invented creature from Lewis Carroll's famous nonsense poem "The Jabberwocky", which appeared in his novel "Through the Looking Glass" (1874). Neither in this poem nor in another mention in "The Hunting of the Snark" is there any clear description of the Bandersnatch. After hearing the "Jabberwocky", Alice herself comments that the poem fills her head with ideas, but that she does not know what they are. Carroll's words do indeed seem to have subtle over-tones, just as do low, resonant notes and certain chords. The adjective "frumious" hints at both ferocious and ominous. The shroud of mystery surrounding the Bandersnatch remains - adding to its fascination.

The piece, written for the Kandinsky Trio, approximates to the form of Scherzo and Trio and uses quite abrupt and contradictory musical gestures, in keeping with a creature found in a world behind the Looking-glass. Unconventional playing devices such as col legno gettato, sul ponticello and Bartok pizzicato also play their part in evoking the Lewis Carroll's make-believe, fantasy world.

UA 4.

en: Maśniaki, Recollections from the Tatra Mountains, for violin

UA 29. Mai 2011, München

en: Maśniaki refers to the distinguished family of "Gorale" folk violinists, many generations of whom have lived and played in Zakopane, in the heart of the Tatra mountains of Southern Poland. The composer first made their acquaintance in the early 1980's and impressions of listening to their ensembles and playing bassy with them have remained ever since.
This piece makes use of certain melodic traits as remembered over the years, particularly in the ambiguous use of the perfect/augmented fourth and of the minor/major third. The thematic material, however, is all freely invented. The composer drew upon his vivid memories of the energy, intensity and exuberance of the playing and tried to reproduce this in the violin writing.
Many composers besides Szymanowski and Karlowicz have been fascinated by the exceptionally rich cultural heritage of the "Podhale" area and one hopes that countless further generations of travellers and enthusiasts will continue to be enchanted by its highly individual folk music.
The tremolo of the Adagio sections is intended to portray the wide open spaces of the Tatra mountains. These passages can be played improvisando, with bow-strokes of various lengths and speeds, mirroring the dynamic contours.
The composer is grateful to David Fruehwirth for technical assistance.

Der Schimmelreiter

en: Der Schimmelreiter after the novella by Theodor Storm, for cello and piano

UA 3. Oktober 2010 in München

en: The work does not adhere to the plot of the novel, but rather attempts to recreate its severe, oppressive atmosphere. The inexorable destiny of the Count-of the Dykes is suggested in the stringent treatment of the musical material - in its transformations, juxtapositions and in the dialogue between the two instruments.

Der Werwolf / The Banshee

en: The Banshee, after the transcription of Christian Morgenstern' poem Der Werwolf, by Max Knight, for cello and speaking voice

UA 11. April 2010, München

Gleichmütig trägt er der Berg
die Silberdisteln im Haar
er zählt sie nicht nach
dreißig fehlen ihm schon
für sie wird die Erde verraten -

Dem Licht merkt man nichts an
Wie es seidenblau
niedersinkt in die Täler
wie es die Hänge beatmet
unbeirrt von Schatten der Wolke -

Lautlos die Dohlen
gleiten gelassen im Wind
nichts ist ihnen geschehen
noch ist ihm zu trauen dem Frieden
wie lange weiß keiner.

en: The work is based on the dark and richly symbolic poem „Im Gebirg“ (The Mountain) by the eminent Munich Lyricist, Hans Krieger. From the moment the poet first read me one of his most recent poems, „Im Gebirg“, over the telephone, I had a fairly clear image of the sound world, of the harmonies and types of expression I wished to create in this piece. The rich imagery and the particular colour of the words conjoured a vision of the stark Alpine mountain panorama. I decided on the darker, grittier (herb, sandiger) sonorities of the alto flute alongside the cello and alto voice. It was brooding on these thoughts whilst skiing in cloudy weather in the French Alps that the work first began to take shape.
Just as the mountains seem to have layers of life - from the bustle of the valley floor, through the pine forests up to the silent, sparse and scraggy summit, devoid of flora and fauna, so I imagined this piece to be constructed with different "levels". The Alto voice part was written first, together with the harmonic structure (based largely on static, harmonic "pedal-notes") and plans for the rise and fall of tension. The instruments, especially the piano, often play in extremes - either in altitudinous heights, or very low. The Cello and Alto flute are thematically closely linked to each other. An undulating triplet/duplet rhythm (heard at the outset in the piano) acts as a kind of Leitmotiv throughout the entire work, a unifying factor within the constantly changing Alpine landscape.

Rumpelstilzchens Lied und Tanz für Violine und Klavier
Rumpelstilz for violin and piano
UA 31. Januar 2010 in Gräfelfing mit Valerie Steenken, Violine, und Graham Waterhouse, auf YouTube
en: The work was composed for the competition Jugend musiziert.
Valerie Steenken (violin) was awarded a First Prize in the 47th Regional Competition in Munich.

UA 13. Dezember 2009, München

en: Cast in a single movement, this work has three sections - roughly slow, fast, slow. It opens with dark, mysterious clusters low in the piano, superimposed by high strings moving in parallel and restless rhapsodic lines in the piano's middle range. This combination of sounds establishes the mood and harmonic language and recurs at intervals throughout the piece.
The fast, central section is a kind of night-marish moto-perpetuo using repeated sixteenth notes and piled up clusters of chords. String techniques of ricochet bowing, glissandi and harmonics add to a timbral spectrum. The work closes with elements heard at the outset - high ethereal strings against the deep clusters at the lowest end of the piano.
During the writing of this work the emphasis was not on thematic development or on "programmatic" allusions. Rather the contrasting sonorities of the three instruments, often in extremes, are combined much in the same way an artist applies and mixes colours in a painting.

The Akond of Swat for tenor bassoon, bassoon and piano
premiere July 22, 2009, Birmingham, UK, Annual Conference of the International Double Reed Society

en: "The Akond of Swat" takes its title from the well-known poem from the "Book of Nonsense Poetry" (1877) by the Victorian Poet, Edward Lear. The author paints a truly fantastical and quite Romantic picture of this Muslim religious leader, though it is unlikely the he would have known anything about him.
Lear displays his accustomed virtuosity with words, using outrageous rhymes, and drawing upon a wide range of references covering the boistrously inquisitive ("Is he wise or foolish, young or old?"), philosophical ("Does he study the wants of his own dominion?") to the down-right ridiculous ("Does he like new cream, and hate mince-pies?"). Some of the rhythms and alliterations, as well as the slightly brash, abrasive tone of the poem are mirrored in the music.
The two bassoons, with their subtely different timbres share the discourse and operate variously in tandem or opposed to each other. Towards the end of the work the closing line of the poem ("Some one, or nobody, knows I wot, Who or which or why or what is the Akond of Swat") is quoted by the players. A final flourish closes the work, using the ever-present, syncopated "Leitmotiv" which permeates the entire work and is itself a musical transliteration of the words "Akond of Swat". A slow introduction introduces the two protagonists reed instruments, juxtaposing them to demonstrate their particular sound qualities before combining them. A faster section follows, which eventully culminates in an outlandish "Cadenza" where the two bassoons seem to taunt each other at the top end of their respective spectrums.
The Tenor Bassoon was made to order by Guntram Wolf for Richard Moore and makes its very first appearance as a concertante chamber-music instrument in this piece.

Epitaphium In Memoriam W.R.W., für Streichtrio, Adagio ma con moto - CD
UA 19. Juli 2009 München
publ: 2013 Lienau, CD

en: This concise work of 76 bars was originally conceived for the memorial service of William Waterhouse (1931-2007), but remained unperformed. The opening theme has an archaic, plain-song aspect. The harmonic language is coloured by the "perfect" intervals of fourth, fifth and octave, often coinciding with the open strings and natural harmonics. Later there are dove-tailing "cadenza" passages, as well as pizzicato episodes. Contained within is a hidden reference to the "Requiescant in pace" motive from Britten's War Requiem (the first performance of which WRW participated in). The music fades away with an augmented version of the opening theme in the high register of the violin, accompanied by patterns of fifths on natural harmonics and bell-like pizzicato chords.

Did you know … that Epitaphium, composed for string trio by Graham Waterhouse, is performed today in Wigmore Hall in a memorial concert for his father, the bassoonist William Waterhouse?

Phoenix Arising Tribute to William Waterhouse, for bassoon and piano
Premiere 9 January 2009 London
DEA 24. April 2009 Berlin
publ: 2009 Accolade

en: The writing of Phoenix Arising was coloured by thoughts of William Waterhouse* - of his phenomenal energy, his restless intellectual curiosity, as well as his deep conviction in the broad expressive possibilities of “his” instrument. The piece celebrates the unique tonal qualities of the bassoon and the lyrical and the virtuoso elements of both instruments (the piano was also a favoured instrument of WW, indeed the piano section of his library outspanned any other). In general the two instruments complement and support each other, the timbres being integrated, rather than being set off against each other. A further point of departure was the Phoenix legend. According to the ancient Greeks, the earth-bound fledgling arose from the swamps to become a fully-fledged Phoenix and symbolize longevity of life.
The bassoon opens the work at the lowest end of the spectrum, eventually working up to top “e” over rising, bi-tonal piano arpeggios, a combination which returns at the end of the piece. The middle section employs a variation technique remembered from Boeddecker's Sonata sopra la Monica (Strasbourg, 1651), a work performed by WRW in earlier years. The bassoon part weaves in and out of "harmonic patterns" laid down on the keyboard.
Integrated within are WRW's favoured arpeggios of fourths, his long, visceral, low "B-flats", as well as his typical 'warm-up' flourish in "32nds" from top to bottom - coined so as not to be imitable by his colleagues! Before the final "Toccata-like" section, there is a "cantabile" section, in which the bassoon aspires to a voice-like role, expressly claimed by WW as an ideal for wind players to strive for.
The work was commissioned by the Park Lane Group, London, in memory of William Waterhouse and was first performed on 9th January 2009 at the PLG series in the Purcell Room, London by Rosemarie Burton (bassoon) and Christopher White (piano). The first performance in Germany was given at the Symposium of the "Deutsche Gesellschaft für Oboe und Fagott" in Berlin on 24th April 2009 by the same artists.
* WILLIAM WATERHOUSE (1931-2007), bassoonist (member of Melos Ensemble, London Symphony Orchestra, BBC Symphony Orchestra), co-founder of British Double Reed Society, teacher (RNCM) and scholar of his instrument (Groves, Langwill Index), was the composer's father and this piece was written as a tribute to his memory.

April 2009.
* WILLIAM WATERHOUSE (1931-2007), Fagottist (Mitglied des Melos Ensemble, London Symphony Orchestra, BBC Symphony Orchestra), Mitbegründer der British Double Reed Society, Lehrer (Royal Northern College of Music) und Musikwissenschaftler (Groves, Langwill Index), war der Vater des Komponisten, und das Stück wurde zu seinem Andenken geschrieben.

Bright Angel for three bassoons and contrabassoon (3 Fagotte und Kontrafagott)
premiere: Brigham Young University, Provo, Utah, USA
International Double Reed Society Conference 2008
publ: 2009 Accolade

en: "Bright Angel" was written for the IDRS Conference 2008 in Provo, Utah, where it received its first performance given by Michel Bettez, Richard Ramy, Richard Moore and Henry Skolnick under the direction of the composer. In keeping with the American setting of the Congress, the title refers to a piece of American lore. "Bright Angel", the name of a trail in the Grand Canyon, stands for impressions of a hike which the author took from the North Rim into the gorge of the Colorado and up to the South Rim in 1972, aged 9, with his father William Waterhouse (1931-2007) during the latter's year spent at Indiana University.
The piece tries to reflect a sense of wonder and awe at both the majesty and the brutality of Nature. Some of the contours (or recollections of them) are mirrored in the variously undulating and jagged lines. Also recalled during the composition were the perpetually shifting vistas, as well as the toil of tramping out the dusty trail, stumbling over boulders, cowering during a storm.
The musical material is mostly contained within the opening motive, first heard as a solitary voice, before recurring over a wide-spanning accompaniment of arpeggios. The slow, reflective introduction gives way to a faster section, based on an energetic, pulsating rhythm. It is to the tranquil mood of the opening that the work eventually returns, closing on an unresolved chord, to capture the eternity of the Canyon.

Did you know … that Bright Angel, composed by Graham Waterhouse for three bassoons and contrabassoon, relates to the Bright Angel Trail of the Grand Canyon which the composer hiked with his father at the age of nine?

Spiral Fragments for violoncello
Maestoso - Allegro - Adagissimo - Pizzicato - Vivace - Maestoso come prima
premiere Cambridge, Churchill College, March 2008
DEA 5. Juli 2008 München Gasteig

en: "Spiral Fragments" was written whilst a "Visiting Fellow" in Cambridge and was presented at a recital of own works in Churchill College in March 2008. The "Spiral" idea manifests itself both in the overall cyclic form of the piece (beginning and ending with a similarly slow movement) as well as in the thematic material within the movements. Often the lines curl back within themselves, suggesting a spiral shape. The movements cover a diverse range of characters, from the serious and impetuous to the desolate and whimsical.

UA 2008, Neuss, "Jugend Musiziert"

en: The poem "Gruselett" is taken from Morgenstern’s "Galgenlieder" (1905). It is related to nonsense poetry, popular in England at the time, a well-known example of which is the "Jabberwocky" by Lewis Carroll ("’Twas brillig and the slithy toves did gyre and gimble in the wabe…"). In the German language one thinks of Kurt Schwitters’ Ursonate. The words are chosen as much for their sounds as for their literal or implied meaning and are both a delight and a challenge for the composer attempting to set them.

There is a perennial fascination for re-creating linguistically virtuosic works in other languages. Works such as "Jabberwocky", "Finnegan’s Wake" as well as "Zettel’s Traum" by Arno Schmidt have all appeared in languages other than the original. Morgenstern himself translated Strindberg and Ibsen. There have been several attempts at translating Morgenstern into other languages, notably by Max Knight (1972) and W.D. Snodgrass (1967).

The English translation used here, however, was made by the composer himself and the priority was in the sounds and “speakability” of the words, to ease the task of the performers. The interaction of the words and the music is achieved best when three instrumentalists both play and speak their parts simultaneously, though in theory the playing and speaking could be performed by different people. The parts are to be learned like two-part inventions on a keyboard, the rhythmical flow passing between speaking and playing. A degree of theatricality enhances the dark, mysterious aspect of the piece, and imaginative use of the voice is required from the players.

en: Written in Summer 2007 in Berlin for a concert in Normandy.
The theme is the somewhat sentimental 18th century folk-song "Je veux revoir ma Normandie", and was suggested by a French flautist and is first heard in the violin after a short introduction. Each instrument has its own variation, beginning with the violin. The cello variation reverts to the minor mode. Variation 6 uses entirely harmonics and pizzicato on "white notes". In the last variation, "alla Polacca", two additional French tunes - "J'ai du bon tabac" and "Au claire de la lune" - make an appearance and even threaten to "take over" the preceedings. But it is the contours of the familiar Normandy theme which prevail in a breathless "stretta" coda.

März 2006 in München
2) harmonisch - vom diatonisch Konsonanten ins dissonant Vertrackte

publ: 2004 Zimmermann

en: The first sketches for Sicilian Air were made during the composer's first visit to Sicily in the late 1980s, though it was not until 2003 that the piece was worked into its present form. The characteristic dotted rhythm of the Sicilienne permeates much of the piece, as does perhaps also a certain blend of formality and spontaneity, a feature, so it seemed at the time, of certain Sicilian Baroque palazzi (e.g. Villa Patagonia in Bagheria, near Palermo). The piece is cast in rondo form and lies within the tradition of the "Morceau de Concert" which was en vogue in the 19th century.

for Great Highland Bagpipe and String Orchestra (für Dudelsack und Streicher) - CD, Review

en: The bagpipes occupy a central place in Scotland's culture and folklore and have accompanied both festive and solemn occasions in public life through the ages. The instrument's repertoire ranges from traditional folk dances to "piobroch" (virtuosic music for a solo piper in which the form is determined by varying degrees of ornamentation.)

In "Chieftain's Salute" both the ceremonial and the jubilant aspect of the instrument are brought to the fore. Like the organ, the pipes are able to play an unbroken melodic line articulated by the characteristic style of ornamentation, the air coming from a reservoir that is constantly replenished by the player. The melodic chanter, tuned to its own particular temperament, is accompanied by three drones.

Few attempts have been made hitherto to combine the bagpipes with classical orchestral instruments, due mainly to conflicts of balance and tuning. A satisfactory balance was achieved in this piece by placing the piper at a distance from the orchestra.

A "Salute" is a piece of music played at a Highland gathering in honour of an individual, in this case the "Chieftain", who is the Head of a Clan.

Chieftain's Salute is a concertante work in which the musical argument is shared equally between the pipes and the strings. First the strings, then the pipes have extended passages alone. As the work progresses soloists and orchestra are combined. On occasion the strings imitate the pipes, taking over the low B flat drones; elsewhere they add harmonic colour to the bare melodic line of the pipes.

publ: 2001 Heinrichshofen's Verlag

en: The satirical text of 'Song of the Flea' is taken from Goethe's 'Faust' (Part 1) and is recited by Mephistopheles during the scene 'Auerbachs Keller in Leipzig'. During a visit to the Liszt House in Weimar I discovered that among the numerous settings of Goethe poems were also fragments of sketches by Liszt for 'Es war einmal ein Koenig' for bass, male-voice choir, and piano. The composition may have been intended for the Goethe celebration in 1849, though the date of the sketches remains uncertain. Liszt may have known Beethoven's setting of the text for voice, choir, and piano from 1810. The distinctive rhythmical scanning, the cynical under-current, and the downright nonsensical element of the text, recalling an English genre of nonsense-poetry, combined to prompt me into attempting a setting of the poem myself. The spoken part of 'Song of the Flea' may be recited either by a second person or by the cellist himself. The part should be declaimed with variety of expression and may carry a discreet hint of sarcasm. Attention should be paid to clear articulation and to the balance between voice and cello. The voice risks being covered, especially in the 'arco'-passages. The player can make use of different colors of pizzicato by plucking nearer the bridge or nearer the fingerboard. It is recommended that pizzicato notes on the C-string (stems pointing upwards) be played with the thumb. For the upper three strings (stems pointing downwards) the second or first fingers may be used. Some players may prefer to play the passages in bars 132 to 136 and 175 to 180 with the first finger. Unless otherwise marked, the note D in pizzicato passages is to be played with open string. Pizzicato notes should be allowed to vibrate. Towards the close of the work, the 'geangte' ('aggrieved') cellist slaps with the left hand irritatedly on his left knee, then on his left cheek, on his right shoulder, and finally, with his right hand, resolutely on the finerboard. Before slapping the fingerboard the bow is swiftly taken by the left hand and the A, D, and G strings damped with the same hand, so that only the C string vibrates. The 'Song of the Flea' was composed in Spring 2000 and was first performed on the occasion of the 70th birthday of Professor Reiner Thomssen, to whom the work is dedicated. The first public performance was in November 2000 in Delmenhorst.

Grave - Allegro non troppo - Adagio piacevole - Grave - Leggiero e grazioso - Grave
publ: 2000 Hofmeister

en: The title "Pas de Deux" refers to a ballet dance for two protagonists, which variously react with and against each other. Sometimes they are in sympathy with graceful, harmonious movements; elsewhere they provoke each other with abrupt, jerky movements. The episodes are separated by a Grave ritornello, which recurs in different registers throughout the work. At the close the ritornello develops into an extended, chorale-like passage, eventually fading out at the highest extremities of the two instruments.

Hymnus op. 49 for Wind Ensemble (Bläserensemble) - CD, Review
publ: 2000 Hofmeister

en: This work inhabits an austerely coloured sound world, one largely determined by the preponderance of low instruments in the scoring. Originally conceived for church use on the Sunday following All Souls' Day, the work contains predominantly homophonic writing which evokes the ritualistic aspect of a hymn. A solemn chorale, heard three times in the course of the work, is harmonized by pairs of conflicting triads in the bassoons and horns. There are two episodes interspersed between these chorale appearances.

Did you know … that the Comet Hale-Bopp inspired Graham Waterhouse to compose Hale Bopp for string orchestra, which ends with a boy soprano singing How Brightly Shines the Morning Star?
(Wikipedia recent additions 8 August 2010)

en: 1997 was the year of the comet "Hale Bopp", named after the astronomer who first discovered it. An other-wordly atmosphere is evoked by such devices as tremolandi, glissandi and wide spaced scoring. At the climax of the piece, towards the close, the high, tremolo chord suddenly falls quiet and as if from the far distance, from out of the ether, the choral tune "How Brightly shines the Morning Star" may be heard. Attributed to Philipp Nicolai (1597), the plangent melody is given to the voice of a boy treble accompanied by a string quartet. Although strictly speaking the comet is not a star, each has its own place in the celestial firmament and has exercised a like fascination on man over the ages.

"ESTA news and views" kommentierte 1999:
It is a wonderfully atmospheric piece, inspired by the appearance of the comet of the title. Opening lontano effects with high tremoli give way to expansive melodic lines under-pinned to harmonies which, though chromatic and dissonant, are skillfully laid out for the string orchestra to achieve maximum resonance and intensity … Waterhouse's string-writing is highly accomplished and imaginative … and lies extremely well for all instruments. [Celtic Voices] An impassioned, richly textured piece, it shares thematic elements with its opus partner Hale Bopp … This fine pair of pieces makes a welcome and musically substantial contribution to the repertoire for string orchestra. It provides rich rewards for the players and their audiences.

Waterhouse, Graham "Hale-Bopp" on Portrait 2. English Chamber Orchestra (Meridian CDE 84510). This 1997 piece celebrates the bright comet with scoring that the composer says “evokes an other-worldly atmosphere.” It ends with the 16th century chorale tune “How Brightly Shines the Morning Star.”

Hungarian Polyphony

Hungarian Polyphony, op. 25 für Streichquartett
UA 1987
publ: 1996 Hofmeister
en: This single movement work began in 1984 as a trio for two violins and cello, for outdoor use at the London Covent Garden Market, the brusque opening chords designed to catch the attention of passers by. It is dominated by Hungarian Gypsy scales and Hungarian rhythms (short-short long). It was enlarged into a string quartet in 1986 and the first run through was at the National Chamber Music Course the same year. The work was subsequently shown to the conductor Sergiu Celibidache, who suggested further re-writing and arranged for the work, revised as a string quartet, to be performed by members of the Schleswig-Holstein Orchestra at the 1988 Festival. It was published in 2000.

The work is built around two principal themes themes. After the chordal opening the first appears, irregular in meter and largely based on a scale with sharpened fourth and flattened seventh, common to Hungarian folk music. The resultant ambiguous colouring (D major/E major) pervades the entire work. The second theme, based on a triadic motif is introduced fugally and later appears in a bitonal version. Midway through the piece the momentum is suddenly halted by a brief Adagio before the apotheosis of the work in which the two main themes are contrapuntally combined. The work closes with a reappearance of the opening chords.

en: Aztec Ceremonies was commissioned by Henry Skolnick and was premiered by him in 1995 at the International Double Reed Society congress at Rotterdam, accompanied by the composer. The composer writes, “During a recent visit to Mexico I visited several archaeological sites, where I was impressed by certain aspects of Aztec ritual. In this piece each of the five sections represents a ceremony honouring a particular deity.” The work is dedicated to Günter Angerhöfer, eminent authority on the contrabassoon, on the occasion of his 70th birthday.

en: While Celtic art refers to a definale style of decoration, the sources of Celtic music, being less clear, incorporate folk traditions from the Western fringes of the British Isles. This piece explores a predominantly lyrical vein.

Praeludium

Praeludium for Piano op. 32 - CD
UA 1993 London

Titel Praeludium op. 32 für Klavier

publ: 2002 Lienau
en: This virtuoso composition was written in 1992 and premiered in London in 1993. Two themes are juxtaposed: a rhythmic-chromatic one and a lyrical theme with complex chordal superimpositions which are further developed in a cadenza before a recapitulation of the opening material. A coda with bravura cascades of octaves and sevenths closes the work in a striking finale.

USA Premiere 6 June 1998 Tempe, Arizona, U.S.
publ: 2000 Accolade

en: The title refers ambigously both to shifts of harmony and to movements scored for winds. The work was first performed at the "Purcell Room“, London, on the occasion of the 60th birthday concert of the composer's father, the bassoonist William Waterhouse.

en: Derived from sketches dating back to University days, this piece was written for a young string players' course some 15 years later. Each movement is nominally based on one or more traditional folk melodies taken from "The Dancing Master's Fiddle Book". Whilst the tunes are quite simple, the instrumentation admits "divisi" scoring and independent voice-leading, thus exploiting the full registers of the string instruments.
